AOMORI CITY THIRD IN BREEDERS’ CUP JUVENILE TURF
Godolphin’s Aomori City, a two year old Oasis Dream colt out of Setsuko, finished third in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar on November 2nd. Born and raised at Saint Pair and bred in partnership with Mme Elizabeth Fabre’s Ecurie Peregrine Aomori City was sold at Godolphin as a yearling at the Arqana August sale. The Charlie Appleby trained colt now has two wins and two places from five career starts and is the winner of the Group 2 Vintage S together with places in the July S and now the Breeders’ Cup Turf.
At Del Mar Aomori City was drawn eleven of the twelve runners and was slow to break from the stalls. Held up in the rear by jockey William Buick Aomori City made a strong run in the straight and was finishing fastest of all to take third place only a neck and 1/2 length behind the winner Henri Matisse and the second Iron Man Cal. Aomori City now has an official rating of 113 putting him among the best two year old colts in Europe.
His dam the Shamardal mare Setsuko was injured while in training and was only able to produce two foals, Aomori City and the useful Shalaa gelding Sous La Neige. She was a 1/2 sister to the Group winner Soleil Marin.
