MONSUN IN AUSTRALIA
Fiorente’s victory in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup at Flemington on November 5 gave his sire Monsun an eighth Group 1 win in 2013. Monsun has won Group 1 races in 2013 in England, France, Germany and now Australia with Maxios, Silasol, Estimate, Novellist and Fiorente. Fiorente was bred by Ballymacoll Stud and was a Group 2 winner in England before going to Australia. He is part of the fabulous Frankel generation of middle distance horse which have dominated so many of the best international over the last three years. Aside from Frankel himself the European crop of 2008 included Nathaniel, Al Kazeem, Reliable Man, Maxios, Farhh and Fiorente, the last four of whom have all won major international races this year as five year olds.
The supporting race on Melbourne Cup day was also a triumph for German based sires as Salon Soldier, a son of Soldier Hollow, won the Visit Victoria Plate, beating Midsummer Son, another son of Monsun.
